Beautiful Halloween

Growing up, Halloween was my favorite holiday. Every year, my mom would hand sew my costume, which included everything from an ice skater to a princess to the Yellow Power Ranger (I'll never forget this year - it snowed and I was so upset my little yellow shoe covers got all wet). Each year, the neighborhood kids and I would meet up, and one brave parent would take us out Trick-or-Treating, while the rest of the parents stayed back to drink warm apple cider with rum. Sometimes the (un)lucky parent would even take a mug outside with them (I'll probably be doing this, too, when I have kids). One year when I got home from collecting candy in my pillowcase, I laid out my collection on the living room floor like I did every year. M&Ms in one pile, Twix in the other and boring candy in the trash. But when I woke up the next morning to pick which candy I wanted to pack with my lunch, there was nothing left. Wrappers were strewn across the floor, no candy in sight. Not even a popcorn ball was left. "Dad!" I yelled. "How could you eat all my candy?"

It definitely wasn't my dad, but a rabid raccoon that had found its way into our house, ransacked my candy and was now hiding in the basement. Frightened but determined, my dad proceeded to set up cardboard boxes to make a maze to the door for the raccoon to get out of the basement. As he chased it out the back door, it hissed, I screamed. Years later, my dad told me just how scared he was. But it still remains my favorite Halloween story. Although I don't hope for a raccoon to eat all of your candy and hide out in your house, I do wish you a Happy Halloween weekend full of memories.

Sneaky little candy stealer!

Fashion Obsession of the Day

Who would have thought mixing a cable knit sweater with a mini skirt could be so cute? Although the length of this skirt cancels out the warmth of the fabric, tights and boots are the perfect way to style this up for winter.

Fashion Obsession of the Day

My newest love is for the French line, A.P.C., that gives vintage-inspired and timeless pieces a modern twist. This tweed cape has amazing details like a fur-lined hood, sleeve slots and pockets. I had my heart set on buying a cape as my new winter coat, but I was discouraged when I realized you can't really carry a shoulder bag with a cape. Maybe I can learn to carry my handbag, well, clasped in my hand. Or I could buy a new handbag. I think I'm on to something here.

Fashion Obsession of the Day

I just love this girly, vintage inspired dress. The floral print and mustard give the frock a straight out of the 60s feel, while the ruched sleeves and pockets make this totally 2010. And with a pair of opaque tights and a cardigan, this versatile dress will take you through the winter and into spring.

Beautiful Friday

For something a bit different, I thought I would share with you one of my favorite songs. In addition to my love of fashion and photography, I am a huge music lover. Lately I've been listening to extremely emotional songs. "Runaway" is a the definition of sadness, but Karen O's voice is just so beautiful.

Stripes, pockets, long sleeves and a totally affordable price? This shopping fast is getting harder and harder.

Va va voom. This corset dress, by luxe lingerie designer Agent Provocateur, is probably not meant for the public eye. But it's so beautiful (and pricey), there's no way I'd let this sit in my closet only for, um, special occasions. Pair it with a boyfriend blazer or an oversized cardigan to tone down the super sexy shape.

Fashion Obsession of the Day

The look of the season is edgy meets preppy - cardigans and combat boots, plaid skirts and lace-up oxfords with cutesy socks. This striped double-breasted military cardigan is the epitome of preppy. But pair it with super slim jeggings and leather over the knee boots and you've got your edge.

Beautiful Weekend

I can't be the only one who wakes up on Monday morning wishing the world would stop. I spent the weekend eating lots of good food, running and napping. I've gotta start being more productive on the weekends (does baking apple pie count). Hope you enjoyed your weekend, too.

Beautiful Friday

Last night a friend told me he can't figure me out. And he's right. I'm not someone who opens up easily. One of those people who did understand me, my best friend since 8th grade, made me laugh until I gasped for air. Together we were a blonde hurricane. But we had a falling out and probably will never be friends again. Yesterday's conversation and this picture reminded me of her. Have you ever gone through a BFF breakup?

But this is entirely too melancholy of a topic for a Friday. So here's some girl porn.

Have a fabulous weekend.

I can't be the only one who has sat at their work desk with frozen palms, huddled next to a space heater wishing it was socially acceptable to wrap myself in a blanket. (My office can get so cold, I've even worn fingerless gloves while I type.) Well this Free People sweater solves that problem. Think I can get away with wearing it everyday for the next five months?

What's that you say? I have no use for a sequin one-shoulder cocktail dress that costs more than $100? I guess you're right.

Fashion Obsession of the Day

I picked a horrible time to go on a shopping fast. In an effort to save money, I've decided to stop shopping until after the holidays. That's like three months without sugar (which I'm also making an effort to give up, at least on most days of the week). And without sugar and shopping, I get cranky. So when my October Anthropologie catalog came in the mail, it was a cruel tease. A timeless, flattering shape with modern details like kimono sleeves, contrasting hues and a textured gold silk skirt make this dress irresistible. I'll just have to wait it out (sale!).

Computer blahs

Many apologies for my lack of posting Beautiful Weekend photos yesterday. My computer has been acting very strangely. So as a consolation, I leave you with this adorably romantic photo. I love the fall, but to be on a beach right now would be amazing. I'm already daydreaming about next year's vacation plans.

Beautiful Friday

The sun is shining, I'm caffeinated up (thanks Starbucks) and I like my outfit (jeggings, my fav bicycle tee, a schoolboy blazer and black oxfords). If I'm in a good mood it means one of three things: I lost two pounds, I just went shopping or it's Friday. I came across this vintage photograph of Audrey Hepburn in front of the Eiffel Tower this morning and was so inspired. Her beehive hair, cigarette in hand and beautiful rooftop overlooking the most beautiful city in the world - it really reminds me of how chic Paris is. Not only can I take a cue from French women and dress stylishly every day, but I can also channel their confident, sophisticated attitudes in my everyday life. I just can't imagine a French girl losing her cool at work or freaking out about a run in her tights. Maybe if we had bakeries with pistachio mararons and pain au chocolat at every corner I'd be happier, too.

On another note, I'd like to mention that my friend Troy has helped me get 11 new followers in just one day. Thank you. And to all my loyal readers, you are the best. I wouldn't have made it a year and a half without you guys. I might not be Emily from Cupcakes and Cashmere, but I'm Emily from good old Rochester, NY and I'm here to stay.

Fashion Obsession of the Day

My favorite fall look is comprised of leggings, slouchy military boots and oversized button-down shirts. It's easy and stylish. So I just love this floral print top. It adds an air of femininity to an otherwise masculine look.

Stripes? On a coat? This unlikely combination actually turns out to be one of the cutest pieces I've ever seen. The wide contrasting forest and sea foam green stripes + a shoulder bow, bracelet sleeves and a swing shape = perfection. Designed by Kate Spade, this coat comes with a steep price tag ($745), so I'll be looking out for similar styles for less (Forever 21 are you reading this?).

*This post is dedicated to my mom, who found this coat online yesterday while being extremely productive at work.

Fashion Obsession of the Day

A pair of full-length leather gloves is a perfect (and warm) winter accessory. These perforated, cashmere-lined (!) leather gloves from Juicy Couture are so luxe and chic I can't stand it. I wouldn't even want to take them off inside.

Beautiful Weekend

The first weekend of October brought chilly weather, but that also meant the cozy sweaters in the back of my closet made their first appearance. I also gave in and turned the heat on in my apartment. On Saturday I worked all day, but it was to cover a fashion show, so I can't complain. Sunday I tried to get back in the distance running game by running 15 miles and increased my carb intake by baking this caramel cake. Hope you enjoyed the debut of October, too.
